Design on a Dime How to create a Sensibly Chic home while staying on budget eBook Therese Patterson

I consider myself a fairly decent (aka novice) decorator. I like creating a space without spending too much money especially since I change my mind so often. 'Design on a Dime' is a great addition to my decorating how-to library. The author, Therese Patterson, doesn't tell you to go out and buy the most expensive piece of furniture, instead she shows you how to use what you have and work it!

I'm a big thrift/antique shop buyer and she gave wonder tips on how to use these cool, eclectic pieces of furniture as a focal point in my living space. Just because it's old or has been used and loved by others, doesn't mean it can't find a place in your home and style. 'Design on a Dime" shows you how to use color, furniture placement, and lighting to reflect your personality and style.

Be sure to read about furniture proportion. I found this super helpful when buying our new sofa and ottoman for our living room. Sure it might look great in the showroom but without making a floor plan beforehand, I might have made a HUGE mistake. I thought for sure this one sofa would be perfect in the space but when I put it in the floor plan, it was GIGANTIC and I lost all my useable space for walking traffic and other furnishings.

This is a wonderful book for a new homeowner or for that person who loves to change the look of their home often. Read this book before you start creating a new living space...it'll open your eyes to a ton of ideas!

Love this DIY account from budgeting to "how tos"....won't need to hire a decorator now, and my budget really LOVES that!!
Such a helpful, easy book! I loved this book and it helped me simplify my design projects! Thank you Therese!
I would highly recommend the lighting design and design concepts in this book. Besides being a gifted designer, she literally made my project look better by getting the lighting and design right the first time, on schedule and within budget.
This little gem of a book has so many sensible and fabulous ideas. I think my favorites were Make an inspiration file and if you like it, and it suits you, use it! The tips on lighting are great as well. Also loved the new paint idea to completely freshen a room! Everyone can benefit from reading this little gem!
This is a practical and concise book that offers many tips on how to decorate and design on a “dime.” It offers some great insight on different interior decorating styles and how to select what works best for you. There are also some great tips on accessorizing with what you already have and some helpful ideas I would not have thought of on my own. Well written - its definitely worth checking out.
This book is a quick read AND yet full of useful, practical information about how to improve your home décor without spending a fortune. Lots of useful tips for quick fixes as well as helpful info to create a longer-term strategy for improving your home, room by room.

I agree with the author 100%--a coat of paint in a new, fresh color is the most inexpensive way to make a dramatic change in a room or your whole house!
This is a great book for anyone who wants their home to look like a model, but doesn't want to spend a fortune. We really had trouble choosing paint colors for our new home, so my favorite chapter was “Select Your Color Palette.” Everyone should have an “inspiration folder” to see what colors make your soul sing. We not only chose perfect colors to make some of our smaller rooms look “bigger” and more inviting, but we also have a soothing flow through our home after using Therese’s color tips. Our second biggest challenge was choosing fabrics for our living and dining room. “Coordinating Fabrics” really helped us choose draperies and secondary fabrics to give our most used rooms a welcoming, warm and luxurious feeling. Our house looks like it was professionally decorated…it’s absolutely beautiful after using Therese’s useful design techniques, and we came in under our budget with the incredible money saving tips in Design on a Dime!
